Modernizing Your Data Estate with Fabric

Take a messy, real-world data estate and move it onto Fabric the right way, from first ingestion to a working report, without overspending.

Most courses about “modernizing your data” start with a clean architecture diagram and a shopping list of features. This one does not, because your estate does not look like that diagram, and pretending otherwise is how modernization projects quietly fail.

Here is what this course actually is. You have data spread across too many places: an on-prem SQL Server someone stood up years ago, a Synapse workspace, a few folders full of flat files, and a pile of Power BI reports that became the source of truth nobody planned for. We are going to take that reality and move it onto Microsoft Fabric in a way that is clean, governed, and affordable. Not perfect. Clean.

Each lesson builds on the one before it. We start by learning to read your estate honestly, then land your data, shape it, serve it, migrate the legacy pieces, and keep the whole thing from becoming a runaway bill. By the end you will not just know what Fabric is. You will know how to move a real business onto it.

Work through it in order. And wherever you can, map each lesson to your own estate as you go, because that is where this stops being a tutorial and starts being your migration plan.

Lessons

  1. 1 The Estate You Actually Have Before you touch Fabric, learn to read your current estate honestly. Its shape decides everything about how you move it. 7 min
  2. 2 The Target State: OneLake and One Copy of Data What 'modern on Fabric' actually means. OneLake, Lakehouse, workspaces, and capacity, explained in plain terms before you build anything. 8 min
  3. 3 Landing Your Data Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, or shortcuts? Learn which ingestion pattern fits each source so you bring data in cleanly instead of copying chaos. 9 min
  4. 4 Shaping It: The Medallion Approach Bronze, silver, gold sounds like jargon. It is really just three honest stages of trust. Here is what each layer is for and how to build them. 8 min
  5. 5 Serving It: Direct Lake vs Warehouse How to get your gold data in front of people without another copy. What Direct Lake really does, and the honest test for Lakehouse vs Warehouse. 9 min
  6. 6 Migrating Without Breaking Production A source-agnostic playbook for moving off any legacy system, on-prem databases, cloud warehouses, old ETL, without anyone noticing the floor moved, including the backup question people forget to ask. 9 min
  7. 7 Cost and Capacity, Without Surprises How Fabric capacity actually bills, how to size an F SKU, and how to watch usage so throttling and runaway costs never catch you off guard. 9 min
  8. 8 Your Modernization Playbook The whole journey compressed into a repeatable checklist you can run on any estate, plus where to go from here. 6 min
