Lesson 8 of 8 · 6 min
Your Modernization Playbook
You have gone from a scattered, drifting estate to one trusted copy of your data on Fabric, landed, shaped, served, migrated, and kept affordable. In this last lesson I want to do two things: hand you the whole journey as a checklist you can reuse, and point you at where to go next.
The playbook, in one page
This is the entire course compressed into a sequence you can run on any estate. Print it, keep it, run it.
- Map before you move. For every source, answer where it lives, who trusts it, how fresh it needs to be, and who owns it. Sort into move, rebuild, connect, and leave. The discipline is in what you leave behind, or never move at all.
- Design to one copy. Everything lands in OneLake as one copy, stored in open Delta format, read by every engine. That single idea is the whole modernization.
- Land faithfully, or don’t land at all. Shortcut or mirror if you can avoid copying it, pipeline and its connectors if it is a move job at scale, Dataflow Gen2 if it needs cleaning on the way in. When you do land, land raw into bronze, never transform in the same breath.
- Shape in stages. Bronze raw, silver correct, gold business-ready. Three layers so your estate is debuggable and rebuildable, the two things your old one was not.
- Serve without copying. Direct Lake puts Power BI on the single copy at import speed. Lakehouse for engineering-shaped work, Warehouse for SQL-shaped work, same storage underneath either way.
- Migrate by shadowing. Copy legacy into bronze, rebuild the logic, run old and new in parallel, reconcile, then cut over. Retire the old system last, and only after you understand your new backup story.
- Watch the pool. One capacity, shared by everything. Install the Metrics app first, right-size, pause when idle, stop over-scheduling. Look weekly.
If you internalize nothing else, internalize this: modernizing is collapsing many drifting copies into one trusted copy, and doing it in reversible, checkable steps. Every item on this list is just a way to serve that.
The mistakes that sink modernizations
Watch for these, because they are the ones that turn a good plan into a regret.
- Migrating the mess. Recreating a bad structure on a new platform. The move is your chance to fix it, take it.
- Skipping the map. Diving into the tool and moving everything, including the things you should have left behind.
- Cutting over blind. Flipping to the new system without running it in parallel first.
- Setting capacity and forgetting it. The single most common cause of both throttling and overspend.
- Over-scheduling for freshness nobody needs. The quiet, steady way bills grow.
Where to go from here
You have modernized the estate. That estate is now the foundation for the things people actually get excited about, and each of those is its own course in this series.
- Building AI agents with Fabric. Now that your data is clean, trusted, and in one place, it is ready to be the grounding for AI agents that answer real questions over your data. A modern estate is the prerequisite for trustworthy AI, you just built it.
- Fabric cost and capacity, deeper. We covered the essentials here. There is a whole discipline of capacity optimization worth going further on if you run Fabric at scale.
- Real-Time Intelligence on Fabric. For the sources where “once a day” was never good enough, streaming and real-time analytics are their own world.
But first, go do it. Take your real top source and run the playbook on it, end to end, this week. Reading this course teaches you the shape of the work. Running it once on your own estate is what actually makes you the person your team turns to when they say the word “Fabric.” That is the whole point, and you are ready.
